the updates on the website are pretty erratic. I would rather go by what your advisor says, he probably received some document in the mail. The case status doesn't seem to be working that well.

You can check it in your I-797 or Notice of Action at the top left corner.Or if you still have the cashed check you sent to pay for the fee, they sometimes write the case number at the back of the check.
