John and Jane are both generic names. The acronym DOA means dead on arrival. It is a simple and shorter way to say "Unknown deceased male" and vice versa.

because we like having a name. without a name, when we're dead, we're a piece of meat. dead males get called john doe. it's a very common name combination (john and doe) so they don't offend people. john or jane doe could be anybody.
