Thats easy you need practice if you have an android first press homescreen and then rapidly press power button and release ( press and hold the home button) any other os like bada simply press homescreen and power button ICS 4.0.4 has a feature of screenshot in power off menu

you can use your fingers> But the oils and things from your fingers wear down the screen. A stylus is made to protect the screen. It is your decision both work fine.

Special hardware (screen product) is required for touch screens. Software can support it but not give the capability of touch sensitivity.
