Some ppl do get annoyed, yes. Either due to noise pollution or they think you're doing it on purpose. Should find a position where you work alone or make it a habit to work alone or clear your throat in the next room.

If they have access to the area and the shovels, presumably you do too? Can you pop over one night after they've gone and either remove the shovels for safe keeping or secure them somehow so they can't be used?
