bed bugs, red ants (fire ants), ticks, mosquitoes. bed bugs are probably the problem, they come at at night and hide under the mattress.

It doesn't sound like a swelling due to injury which means it could be more serious. I would advise you to go to a vet and get an opinion from him or her. It may not be life threatening, it may be something she can live out her life with but go get it...
