Are you sure you had hoisin sauce and not oyster sauce ? Oyster sauce is shiny syrupy in texture.

Hoisin is basicallly a sweet asian BBQ sauce others that are close: sweet & sour sauce teriyaki glaze (not the marinade) even a little american BBQ sauce would work soy and oyster are a salty liquid, not the thick sweet sauce .
