Highlights are usually a shade or two lighter than your natural haircolor, and low lights are a shade or two darker than your natural hair color. If you are new to the hair dyeing world, I would go to a professional the first time around. Also, if your hair already looks sort of reddish in the sunlight, I'd go for some lighter red highlights.
