Gravel will work fine. But they reproduce very slowly unless you have a bunch of them to start out with.

Put water into the mixture, then strain the sand/ gravel so all of the water comes out. Then put the water somewhere in the sun, the sun will evaporate the water and your salt will be dish/bowl that you put the water in. Hope this helps.
