Google maps now offers the feature of allowing you to change the route. Just drag the blue route line to whichever street you need and it calculates the distance/time on the fly.

I always use mapquest . However, I have noticed when you get in small rural areas mapquest is not accurate at all.

..., if you were to zoom in (at least it's like this on Mapquest ) you can see arrows on one way streets showing the direction of traffic on that particular road. Hope this helps.
