You should try using a fuel system cleaner, i recommend Seafoam, it runs about 7dollars a can but it's worth it

On the shifter is a device called a safty-interlock it prevents you from starting the car in gear. This switch is ether defective or out of adjustment. Have it tested and or replaces.
