New spots on a dalmation molly often look brown first. Then they darken and match the old spots. As they age and grow, dalmation mollies are known for adding more and more spots.

to answer the second question a dead ghost shrip will float so you will know when it dies but that brown stuff just mean that your fish is getting old think of it like a dog getting grey hair
