Of course. Only MLS -listed properties are listed with the MLS - obviously. Quite a few distressed properties are never listed thru an MLS .

To get on the actual mls, yes (there are office assistants who have logins - I think - though maybe not access to the whle mls). Realtor.com does have all the mls listings on it.
