No. US citizens don't have green cards, and they are are not illegal. And there are a dozen other visas besides green cards that allow legal enter into the US.

How indeed? Green cards are issued to allow people to live primarily in the US. Certainly, you could apply for a re-entry permit for a 2 year departure, but 5? Not exactly convenient to say the least...

No problem. Your old and new passport numbers and travel history are linked in one file that the CBP officer can see when he or she checks your green card and new passport.
