It is a good idea, but I have never done it and I have never had a problem. What you can do is just touch the case frequently and that will discharge safely.

No, there isn't. ESD damage is not always immediate. The only way to tell is by inspection under very high powered microscopes.

Unlikely go back and check all the cables and make sure you didn't unplug any when changing the drive.
