DFDs are to describe the way data moves from a subsystem to another, so what you need to do is to define the subsystems of the whole project and then you can build the relations between them by defining the type of data exchanged.

As far as im concerned they are just two different ways of modeling a program, there are more details in UML (or ways to model the program) but beyond that they are both good.
