I would pick Shalimar the Clown because Salman Rusdie is supposed to be a good author or Mark Haddon's book which has a Sparknotes.

The only author I am familiar with is Aravind Adiga. His book The White Tiger is excellent. Takes place in modern India with a psychotic protagonist
