Not really. Even if its unlimited in your contract, you are paying for it one way or another. Also, most phones with internet have sluggish response and are not good for much else than sending emails.

GPS is working fine on WiFi, but is there any WiFi signal in your car while you are driving in the highway ? =D Most applications are working fine on WiFi (only).

Yes, you need the data cable and the software. Your wireless server no doubt will charge you the data fee and dont expect it to be very speedy.

Unlocking your phone will allow you to use another carrier but you will then have to pay them for the service. It's not free.
